Love Addiction Treatment & Rehab
At Lumion, our mission is to offer hope and lasting relief to those who are suffering from love addiction and all types of behavioral addictions.
Is “Love Addiction” really a thing? Yes and, in this case, love is the drug.
Love addiction manifests in people who are afraid of intimacy, and the vulnerability that comes with it. Instead, love addicts seek the “feeling” – the intoxicating high or infatuation that accompanies a new relationship – and are often driven by low self-esteem, a fear of abandonment, and deep, unmet emotional needs.
Love Addiction is a variant of Co-Dependency; where one loses their identity to the fantasy or idealization of love toward another person or multiple people. This commonly stems from the level of emotional attachment we are comfortable with, learned when young.
There are clues to identify the love addict, including:
- An ongoing preoccupation, to the point of obsession, with romantic fantasies and new relationships.
- An inability to exercise control over romantic fantasies and new relationships.
- Negative consequences directly and/or indirectly related to out-of-control romantic fantasies and serial relationships.
The underlying reasons for co-dependent love relationships are almost universally psychological. Failing to address the underlying mental health aspects of co-dependent behavior makes it nearly impossible for treatments to work.
Love addiction tends to be an emotionally-driven obsessive behavior disorder that must be addressed by experienced mental health professionals.

Obsessive love, or love addiction, is a state in which one person feels an overwhelming obsessive desire to possess another person toward whom they feel a strong attraction, with an inability to accept failure or rejection. A love addiction can have serious negative mental consequences and can benefit from behavioral addiction treatment.
Much like sex addiction, successful treatment protocols for love addiction may include:
- Developing healthy coping skills so that unwanted emotions do not lead to compulsive behaviors
- Improving self-control through a series of exercises that put you in command of your actions
- Changing your lifestyle to avoid situations and possible triggers that may lead to obsession toward a partner
The behavioral medicine experts at Lumion offer a personalized treatment approach that addresses the underlying issues that lead to such compulsive behavior, to create a comprehensive plan that addresses an individual’s specific needs. Depending on your specific needs, you might find that some of these holistic approaches to treatment help you regain control of your life and make healthier decisions.
