Stop Obsessing Over Your OCD
At Lumion, our mission is to offer hope and lasting relief to those who are suffering from OCD and other mental health conditions.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder that causes compulsive behaviors. People feel compelled to check things repeatedly, perform certain routines repeatedly, or have certain thoughts incessantly. People who are coping with OCD are unable to control either the compulsive thoughts or the obsessive activities.
- Approximately 3.3 million people have OCD
- This includes some 1% of pediatric population (children)
- With 2% of the adult population suffering from OCD
While more research is necessary, it is increasingly thought that the cause of OCD has a neurobiological basis, with neuroimaging studies showing that the brain functions differently in people with the disorder. Abnormalities or an imbalance in neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, or glutamine are thought to be factors in the occurrence of OCD.
Identifying the condition is the first step toward treating and managing OCD.
“Just relax” is one of the most insensitive statements a person can make to someone who is coping with OCD.
Symptoms of, and Treatment for, OCD
Despite the significant number of people who suffer from OCD, it is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions in the mainstream. Characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce anxiety (obsessions), repetitive behaviors that are engaged in to reduce anxiety (compulsions), or a combination of both, if left untreated, OCD can become completely debilitating.
Common compulsive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) include:
- Excessive double-checking of things, such as locks, appliances, and switches.
- Repeatedly checking on loved ones to make sure they’re safe.
- Counting, tapping, repeating certain words, or doing other senseless things to reduce anxiety.
