Lumion Center is the only treatment center in the world with a Fame Addiction program.
We are a society spending more time capturing the moment than experiencing it.
– Dr. Reef
Our founder, Dr. Reef Karim, is the pre-eminent expert on fame addiction, and as such, is frequently interviewed around the world on the topic of fame and how it’s becoming an ever larger problem in our culture.
What once seemed like a problem exclusive to the celebrity class has become a universal problem, as more and more people become overly reliant on validation from social media and external sources to define themselves internally. This is an extremely dangerous path toward self-validation, too often followed by self-destruction.
Fame Addiction is a behavioral condition, centered on the desperate need for validation at all costs. It’s a constellation of symptoms causing an individual significant anxiety, mood instability, poor self-esteem, identity difficulties, and confusion over existential issues; including family, friends, and life’s purpose.
Dr. Reef Speaking About Fame Addiction
Common characteristics of Fame Addiction include:
Needing constant validation from family, friends, and others (often including strangers)
Significant anxiety and/or mood instability
Difficulties with impulse control
Overly opportunistic with new and current relationships (evaluate for usefulness)
Living in a fantasy world
The effective treatment of Fame Addiction requires a deep-dive into the neurobiology of rewards and values in social decision making, while understanding that disclosing information about the Self is intrinsically rewarding. Such work requires a safe, emotionally supportive environment created by empathetic, experienced, and understanding mental health professionals.
This is decidedly not “Life Coach” material.
Rather, treatment of Fame Addiction requires a deep understanding of the underlying motivations of those who “lose themselves” internally to the external world of fantasy and competition, with the sole focus of being recognized, validated, and approved by others.
